The brown road directional sign system is an internationally recognised method of highlighting the proximity of and providing directions to a place of interest. Brown signs are placed along roads or pathways leading to a particular place of interest or facility. Typically, brown signs are installed at locations where they would be most needed, i.e. close to the entrances to the venues or facilities and at the nearest traffic islands or within road reserves.
Multi-languages are used in brown signs in order to create a visitor-friendly environment for visitors to the venues or facilities. Minimally, all brown signs are required to be in Singapore's four official languages (i.e. English, Simplified Chinese, Bahasa Melayu and Tamil). There is an option to include another language based on the businesses' needs. Multi-lingual brown signs will cater to the needs of the widest range of visitors possible, especially those who are not conversant in the English language.
The application for installation of a brown sign (new, renewal or replacement) is jointly assessed and approved by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Once the application is approved, the approval for installation of a brown sign is valid for 5 years, with an option to renew for another 5 years provided that the conditions for renewal under the Terms and Conditions for Installation of Brown Sign are met.
Application for Installation of Brown Sign
1.1 The applicant must be the owner of the place of interest or facility, and is (a) a Singapore registered business, company or association, or (b) in the case of a Government-owned/linked place of interest or facility, the relevant Government-owned or Government-linked entity (as the case may be).
1.2 The venue or facility must fall under one of the following categories:
a) Established as a place of interest (includes Attractions, Ethnic Precincts, Lifestyle Precincts, Arts & Sports facilities, Visitor Centres, Integrated Resorts, MICE facilities, Ferry Terminals, etc).
b) Endorsed by the Governmental agencies.
2. APPLICATION PROCESS
The application for renewal or replacement of installation of brown sign follows the same process as a new application.
The process is as follows:
Step 1: To apply, complete and submit the on-line Application Form for Installation of Brown Sign. Please click here to start your application.
You have to accept the Terms and Conditions for Installation of Brown Sign (Annex 1) which also include the Technical and Installation Requirements for Installation of Brown Sign. Please see Annex 1.
If you do not receive an acknowledgement for your application within 3 workings days of submission, please send an enquiry to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 2: When the application is accepted, an In-principle Approval Letter will be issued. You may proceed to engage the necessary services for translation and preparation for artwork proposal.
Step 3: After Step 2 is done, complete and submit the Application for Final Approval for Installation of Brown Sign together with necessary supporting documents to the Assistant Director, Asset Management, Singapore Tourism Board, at the above mentioned address.
Step 4: When the application for final approval is accepted, a Final Approval Letter will be issued.
Step 5: Upon completion of the installation works, submit a geotagged photograph of the installed brown sign to STB within 7 working days. Upon verification that the works and relevant documentation are in order, the Letter of Certificate for Installation of Brown Sign will be issued.
