Singapore, 12 July 2017 – Building on the success of the 2015[1] travelling showcase of creative talents, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is bringing Singapore: Inside Out  to two new cities: Tokyo (25-27 August 2017) and Sydney (3-5 November 2017).  Unlike 2015, the showcases are specially curated with host city's audiences in mind, and will feature a strong line-up of talents from both Singapore and the host city. 

Mr Lionel Yeo, Chief Executive of STB said, "We are excited to celebrate the passions and stories of Singapore's creative talents in more overseas markets. With significant outcomes achieved in the 2015 edition, Singapore: Inside Out has become a key platform for us to share the narrative of our fast-growing creative scene, and to catalyse collaborations and opportunities for our talents." 

About the Creative Directors 

The Tokyo edition will be led by Ms Clara Yee, multi-disciplinary designer and co-founder of in the wild, a nomadic creative studio based in Singapore.  Mr Edwin Low of SuperandCo will serve as advisor to the creative team. Mr Low is the founder of Supermama, a home-grown souvenir label known for its strong line-up of Singapore-inspired souvenirs, many of which were products from collaboration between Singapore designers and Japanese craft facilities. 

Ms Yee said, "I'm extremely humbled to see Singapore: Inside Out grow and expand, with an amazing team of creative minds coming together across different countries. We are driven by the possibilities of new expressions in creative culture and the fluid nature of art.  It is with this that we hope Singapore: Inside Out Tokyo will be an opportunity for us to create a new relationship with the world, one focused on living together in this global age." 

The Sydney edition will be helmed by Mr Randy Chan, the Principal Architect for one of Singapore's leading architectural studios Zarch Collaboratives, while Vertical Submarine, an independent local art collective, will take on the role as art director. Mr Chan, a President's Design Award winner, has most recently been selected as the architect for the Singapore Pavilion at the Astana EXPO-2017. 

Mr Chan said, "I'm grateful to be given an opportunity to curate the Singapore: Inside Out showcase for the second time – this time in a different format and with a new group of Singapore creative talents to tell the Singapore story. With Singapore: Inside out Sydney, visitors will be able to get to know and experience Singapore's creative culture, one that is in a state of flux while finding her voice and impulse."

Singapore: Inside Out Tokyo (25 - 27 August 2017) 

Housed in BANK Gallery, an architectural space situated within the city's sophisticated Omotesando district, the Tokyo showcase will feature the theme "HyperCity".  The focus is on the coming together of creatives from Singapore and Japan in joint exploration of the cultural trends arising from the shifts towards a digital urban age. 

Visitors can look forward to collaborations from 13 Singaporean (SG) and Japanese (JP) creative talents from disciplines such as design, music, fashion, sound, performing and visual arts. An example is a sound and visual installation, where compositional sounds created by sound artist Zul Mahmod (SG) will interplay with floral interpretations by plantica (JP). Zul Mahmod, the winner of the Soichiro Fukutake Prize, a special award presented on the occasion of the Benesse Prize in 2017, is part of a generation of exciting Singapore multimedia artists. He has also represented Singapore in multiple international platforms such as the Venice Biennale and Ogaki Biennale.  Josiah Chua (SG), whose avant-garde fashion designs have caught the attention of US pop-star Lady Gaga, will also be unveiling a preview selection from his 2018 capsule collection based on the theme of "HyperCity". Other Singaporean and Japanese artists involved in the Tokyo showcase include Atelier HOKO, Daisuke Yano, diskodanny, Irfan Kasban, Ishinomaki Lab, KITCHEN. LABEL, Media Art Nexus, Miho Shimizu, and Supermama. 

To create buzz and catalyse long-term partnerships amongst the Singapore and host-city creative talents, the showcase will also feature a line-up of partner events that offer audiences additional insights into our wider creative scene and growing pool of talents. 

One of the exciting partner events for Singapore: Inside Out Tokyo is the collaboration between Singapore Chef, Malcolm Lee of Candlenut and Chef Dominique Ansel at the latter's eponymous bakery at Omotesando, Tokyo. The chef-owner of the only Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant in the world[2] will collaborate with the World's Best Pastry Chef 2017[3] to create a delectable dessert, taking inspiration from one of the most iconic dishes from Singapore's culinary history. 

In addition, STB will be partnering PARCO (Singapore) Pte Ltd to launch a retail pop-up showcase in the BY PARCO SHOP&GALLERY and MEETSCAL STORE AOYAMA to feature some of the best names in the Singapore design scene. The retail showcase, which will be happening from 25th August to 3rd September 2017, will feature designer products ranging from fashion and accessories to home furnishings and souvenirs.

​Other partner events such as collaborations to create co-branded menus to four-hand dinners will also be held alongside the showcase. The complete line-up of creative talents and partner events for Singapore: Inside Out Tokyo will be revealed later.

Singapore: Inside Out Sydney (3-5 November 2017)

​The Singapore: Inside Out showcase in Sydney will be located at Kensington Street within the Chippendale Creative Precinct. The theme is "Movement", which not only reflects on the creative process which is made up of different movements, and Singapore's multi-cultural society which has inspired diverse practices and is constantly challenging one's perception of what is generally assumed to be Singaporean. 

The showcase will feature creative talents from Singapore and Australia across disciplines such as visual arts, photography, film, sound, dance and design. The line-up of distinguished talents include former Singapore's National Arts Council Young Artist Award winners Donna Ong and Ezzam Rahman; Kirsten Tan, known for being the first Singaporean filmmaker to clinch a prize at the Sundance Film Festival; Sarah Choo Jing, winner of the prestigious gold prize PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris and Peter Chua, owner and co-head bartender at Crackerjack, and winner of the Asia-Pacific regional title at the Diplomatico World Tournament 2017, an international cocktail competition. 

Partner events ranging from artisan collaborations to four-hand dinners and Singapore-inspired cocktails will also be held alongside the showcase. The complete line-up of creative talents and partner events for Singapore: Inside Out Sydney will be available at a later stage.
