Vehicle Entry Permit Operating Hours To End At 5pm On All Weekdays From 4 February 2005

Singapore, 3 February 2005 - The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are pleased to announce that the trial to shorten Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) operating hours on Fridays in January 2005 has been successful.

Starting 4 February 2005, drivers of foreign-registered cars and motorcycles need not pay VEP fees if they enter Singapore after 5.00pm on all weekdays.  VEP fees for the subsequent days are still chargeable if they continue to use or drive their vehicles in Singapore.

The trial to shorten VEP operating hours on Fridays was an initiative to attract more visitors to Singapore.  LTA found that traffic conditions during the trial remained satisfactory.  There was no significant impact to traffic on the major expressways and roads near the checkpoints and within the Central Business District.

The extension of shorter VEP operating hours to all weekdays will make it more appealing for visitors to drive over to Singapore for a visit or to enjoy the strong line-up of concerts, musicals and other performances in Singapore’s exciting calendar of events.

About the VEP scheme

The VEP Scheme was introduced in 1973 to regulate the entry of foreign-registered cars into Singapore. This scheme was eventually extended to foreign-registered motorcycles in 1992.

Foreign-registered cars and motorcycles are currently allowed free entry into Singapore from 7.00 pm to 2.00 am the following day on weekdays, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and Singapore public holidays.  The free entry period on weekdays will start earlier from 5.00pm with effect from 4 February 2005.  The existing VEP fee is S$20 a day for cars and $4 a day for motorcycles.
